Brewer’s yeast (*Saccharomyces cerevisiae*) is a by‑product of the brewing industry, obtained through washing, drying, and processing. It is rich in crude protein, B‑complex vitamins, nucleic acids, and trace minerals. In recent years, its use as a functional feed supplement for racing pigeons has gained attention. Based on available literature and practical feeding experience, this article systematically reviews its mechanisms of action and proper application.

1. Nutritional Composition and Supplemental Value

The crude protein content of brewer’s yeast ranges from 40% to 60%, with a superior profile of essential amino acids—particularly lysine and methionine—compared to most plant‑based protein sources. The basal diet of racing pigeons, composed mainly of corn, peas, and sorghum, is often limited in lysine, the first‑limiting amino acid. Inadequate lysine intake can impair protein synthesis, reduce hemoglobin production, and consequently affect muscle development and oxygen‑carrying capacity. 4. Facilitation of Post‑Race Recovery and Stress Alleviation

Upon returning from a race, pigeons are often in a state of fluid‑electrolyte imbalance and glycogen depletion, with a fragile digestive system. A heavy, high‑fat or high‑protein meal is not advisable at that moment. Brewer’s yeast, containing readily absorbable small peptides, free amino acids, and nucleotides, provides an immediate source of nitrogen and energy precursors without overburdening the gastrointestinal tract. The synergistic action of B vitamins accelerates lactate clearance and hepatic glycogen resynthesis, shortening the recovery period.

Many fanciers report that when a small amount of brewer’s yeast is mixed with a light feed on the day of return, the birds show noticeably faster recovery of energy and appetite compared to untreated groups—a practical observation consistent with physiological principles.

5. Benefits During Moulting and Breeding

Moulting is one of the most physiologically demanding phases for racing pigeons. Feather growth requires substantial amounts of sulphur‑containing amino acids, biotin, zinc, and copper. The biotin supplied by brewer’s yeast participates in keratin synthesis, contributing to the toughness and gloss of newly grown feathers. During the breeding season, yolk formation and embryonic development demand high levels of nucleic acids and B vitamins. Adding 1%–3% brewer’s yeast to the diet of parent birds has been shown to improve fertility and the early growth rate of squabs, with the nucleic acid (RNA/DNA) content positively promoting cell division and tissue differentiation.

6. Recommended Usage, Dosage, and Precautions

Based on multiple feeding protocols, the following guidelines are suggested:

- Routine maintenance:Add 1%–2% (i.e., 10–20 g per kg of feed) of brewer’s yeast to the daily ration, mix thoroughly, and offer 2–3 times per week.

      - Race and stress periods: Increase the dosage to 2%–3% (20–30 g per kg feed), starting on the day of return and continuing for 3–5 consecutive days.

      - Mixing method:Lightly mist the feed with water until slightly moist (just enough to clump in hand but still crumble easily), then sprinkle the yeast powder evenly and mix well to coat each grain. The moistened feed should be consumed within 30 minutes to prevent spoilage in warm conditions.

      - Storage:Keep the product in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, and use it promptly after opening.

      - Contraindications: During acute bacterial or viral infections, treatment should take priority; supplementation may resume after recovery. Following antibiotic or anthelmintic treatment, it is advisable to wait at least 24 hours before adding brewer’s yeast to avoid direct inactivation or interference with drug absorption.

Brewer’s yeast, as a naturally derived multi‑functional feed additive, has a clear nutritional and physiological basis for optimising the amino acid profile of pigeon diets, modulating intestinal microbiota, enhancing non‑specific immunity, and alleviating physiological stress. Its practical value is supported by empirical feedback from many lofts. However, it should be regarded as an adjunct to fine‑tuned management rather than a substitute for fundamental feeding programs or veterinary interventions. Dosage should be adjusted flexibly according to flock condition, seasonal changes, and training intensity to achieve the best outcomes.
